7 Signs You Need an AC Replacement, Not Another Repair
Nobody wants to replace an AC system, but in Arizona, where systems run most of the year, there comes a point where repairs stop making sense. Here are the signs we look for.
1. The system is 12 to 15 years old
Desert heat is hard on equipment. Past about 12 to 15 years, breakdowns become more frequent and parts get harder to find.
2. Repair bills keep climbing
If a repair costs more than about half the price of a new system, or you have had several repairs in a year, replacement usually saves money.
3. Your energy bills are rising
Older, less efficient systems use more power to cool the same space. A new high-efficiency system can cut your cooling costs.
4. Uneven cooling or poor airflow
Hot rooms and weak airflow can mean a failing compressor, blower or ductwork issues. We check the ducts before recommending a new unit.
5. It uses R-22 refrigerant
R-22 has been phased out and is expensive. A leak in an R-22 system is often a sign to replace it.
6. Strange noises or smells
Grinding, banging or burning smells point to failing components that may not be worth fixing.
7. Frequent cycling
A system that turns on and off constantly is under stress and is likely nearing the end of its life.
