Hail Damage to Your AC and Your Insurance Claim in Arizona

Hail is rare in the Phoenix area, but when a monsoon storm brings it, your outdoor AC unit takes the hit. The condenser's thin aluminum fins dent easily, and damaged fins restrict airflow, raise your energy bills and shorten the life of the compressor.

Signs your AC has hail damage

Look for flattened or bent fins, dimples in the top grille, a cracked or bent fan guard, and a system that runs longer but cools less. Some damage is invisible from the outside, so an inspection is the safest way to know.

What to do right after the storm

Turn the system off if you see obvious damage. Take clear photos of the unit from several angles, along with any damage to the roof and yard. Write down the date of the storm. Then call your insurance company to open a claim.

Working with your insurance company

Many homeowner policies cover hail damage, but coverage and deductibles differ, so confirm with your insurer. A written inspection from a licensed HVAC contractor, with photos, gives your adjuster the detail they need. Freddy's will inspect your unit and document the damage for free.

Repair or replace?

Lightly bent fins can sometimes be straightened. If the coil is crushed or leaking refrigerant, replacement is usually the better value. We'll tell you honestly which applies, and financing through Wells Fargo is available if you need a new system.
